BTE hearing aids are made up of two parts. The hearing aid sits behind the ear and an earmould sits in the ear. The sound travels down from the hearing aid via a tube, into the ear. While the technology itself is just as sophisticated as any other type of device, this is generally considered to be an old-fashioned type of hearing aid. Also, they directly connect to mobile phones and other Bluetooth devices. This allows you to take and receive calls, listen to music and watch tv.

BTE hearing aids are available with several different battery types lasting anywhere from 3 to 21 days. The larger the device behind the ear, the longer the battery. BTE hearing aids are also available with rechargeable batteries. These will typically last all day and are recharged overnight.

The BTE Hearing Aid is not the most cosmetic product available and is not always great for patients with poor dexterity or sight. It is also not always helpful when using the phone (although this can normally be remedied with some additional technology where necessary).

We only tend to fit this type of aid to patients who are already using BTE hearing aids or those whose hearing loss is so severe that no other type of device will have enough power.

In-The-Ear (ITE)

This design sits comfortably in your outer ear. Being larger than the other in-ear designs, the controls are easier to adjust.
