Our Process

Non-specialist

Step 1
Initial Assessment

90 minute consultation

Your initial assessment with our audiologist will involve a verbal consultation and a few tests.

First, we’ll take your medical history and discuss how hearing loss affects your day-to-day life. To get a proper understanding of your lifestyle and requirements, we’ll ask you to fill out a simple questionnaire.

We then carry out Video Otoscopy (examination of the ear with a camera) and remove any wax present.

After this examination, we’ll carry out three functional tests: a Pure Tone Audiogram (standard hearing test) in a soundproof room; a speech understanding test in a quiet environment; and a speech understanding test in an artificially noisy environment.

Finally, we’ll talk you through the results of all three tests and discuss the options available to you to treat your hearing loss, including hearing systems from a range of manufacturers.

Non-specialist

Step 1
Initial Assessment

60 Minute consultation (often less)

Non-specialists typically take your medical history but don’t talk about how hearing loss affects you day to day. This means they overlook your personal requirements in prescribing a treatment.

An Otoscopy will usually be carried out using a less-powerful optical otoscope rather than a camera. Wax, a common cause of hearing loss, may not be removed without a separate appointment, if at all.

Most non-specialists only carry out one functional test, a Pure Tone Audiogram.

They will then discuss options available to you from their affiliated manufacturer.

Step 2
Fitting

60 Minute CONSULTATION

When you come for your fitting, we’ll fully explain how to use and maintain your new hearing system.

We’ll fine-tune the aid by measuring its performance once fitted to your ears. This is the most accurate way of optimising hearing aids.

If you’ve never used a hearing aid before, we’ll lower the level of amplification slightly to help your ears adjust.

Non-specialist

Step 2
Fitting

45 Minute consultation (often less)

A non-specialist will explain how to use and maintain the product.

However, they won’t fine-tune the system. Instead, they use manufacturers’ suggested settings. This does not take into account your individual ears and means performance isn’t verified.

Amplification may also not be reduced for first-time hearing aid users. This can mean an uncomfortable period of adjustment.

Step 3
Follow ups

2 oR 3 EXTRA 30 MINUTE CONSULTATIONS

As you get used to your improved sense of hearing, we’ll make sure your new system is working perfectly.

This means continuing to educate you around its use and maintenance. We’ll also continue fine-tuning the devices, making incremental improvements as your ears adjust.

Non-specialist

Step 3
Follow ups

1 EXTRA CONSULTATION

Non-specialists usually offer a single follow-up consultation to adjust settings and remind you how to use and maintain your aid.

Step 4
Ongoing aftercare

6 monthly checkups

As hearing loss is usually progressive, we’ll repeat your hearing test every year and continue tuning your aids if necessary.

You’ll also receive walk-in repairs six days a week from our highly trained front of house staff.

Non-specialist

Step 4
Ongoing aftercare

VARIABLE AFTERCARE

Some national companies will offer 6 month appointments while others will wait for you to call them.

Most non-specialists aren’t trained in hearing aid repair and may have to return a device to the manufacturer to resolve issues.
